Word of the Day November 2, 2026 – שמורת טבע (Nature Reserve)

🌿 שמורת טבע — When Protecting, Conserving, and Preserving Share the Same Hebrew Root

In today’s reading, we dive into a fascinating study of chimpanzees living in a nature reserve in Senegal.

Researchers observed how these animals pass down their knowledge to younger generations. For instance, one chimpanzee mother helped her daughter learn how to use a stick to fish ants out of their nest.

But let’s take a closer look at the phrase שמורת טבע (shmurat teva), which means “nature reserve.”

It consists of two words:

  • שמורת (shmurat) — the construct form of שמורה, meaning “reserve” or “protected area.”
  • טבע (teva) — “nature.”

What’s really interesting is the root ש־מ־ר (SH-M-R), which captures the notion of keeping, guarding, protecting, or preserving.

This root has given rise to a whole family of words in Hebrew:

🌱 לשמור (lishmor) — to keep, protect, or preserve.

חשוב לשמור על הטבע
It’s important to protect nature.

🏞️ שמורה (shmura) — a reserve or protected area.

זו שמורת טבע גדולה
This is a large nature reserve.

🥫 שימורים (shimurim) — canned foods, preserves.

קנינו שימורים בסופרמרקט
We bought canned goods at the supermarket.

🌳 שימור (shimur) — preservation or conservation.

שימור היערות חשוב מאוד
Forest conservation is very important.

🌿 להשתמר (lehishtamer) — to be preserved, sustained, or kept alive.

המסורת השתמרה במשך מאות שנים
The tradition has been preserved for hundreds of years.

A particularly interesting connection:

In French, the verb “conserver” (to preserve) can refer to food, heritage, or nature. Hebrew works the same way: שימורים (preserved foods) and שימור (preservation) both come from the same root.

And this root is truly ancient!

In the Bible, the verb לשמור appears in Genesis (2:15), when humans are placed in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it:

לעבדה ולשמרה

"To work it and to keep it."

So, one root connects thousands of years and bridges diverse fields: protecting nature, preserving food, passing down traditions, and safeguarding heritage.

ש־מ־ר : to keep, protect, preserve.
